Grootschalige wereldwijde registratie voor onderzoek naar behandelingspatronen en ziektelast onder patiënten met veneuze trombo-embolie (VTE)

AMSTERDAM, 3 september 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Het Thrombosis Research Institute (TRI) in Londen kondigde vandaag de lancering aan van het GARFIELD (Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD) VTE-register, een innoverend onderzoeksinitiatief dat het beheer en de uitkomsten onderzoekt van acute en langetermijnpatiënten met symptomatische veneuze trombo-embolisme (VTE). Dit register, geleid door een internationaal stuurcomité onder toezicht van het TRI, zal 10.000 patiënten met acute VTE opvolgen in reële situaties. GARFIELD VTE wordt ondersteund door een onvoorwaardelijke subsidie van Bayer HealthCare.

VTE is een ziekteproces met twee samenhangende aandoeningen: diepe veneuze trombose (DVT), waarbij een bloedstolsel ontstaat in een diepe ader zoals in de benen, en pulmonaire embolie (PE), een levensbedreigende aandoening waarbij een deel van het stolsel afbreekt en via het hart de longen bereikt, waardoor de bloeddoorstroming naar de longen wordt afgesloten. In de westerse wereld sterft elke 37 seconden iemand aan VTE.

"Veneuze trombo-embolie blijft een aanzienlijke klinische uitdaging en een zware last voor patiënten en de gezondheidszorg," aldus Professor The Lord Kakkar, professor chirurgie aan University College London en directeur van het Thrombosis Research Institute, Londen, Verenigd Koninkrijk. "Robuust uitkomstenonderzoek zal een grote bijdrage leveren aan een beter begrip van hoe men betere patiëntuitkomsten kan behalen. Wij zijn erg dankbaar voor de onvoorwaardelijke subsidie van Bayer HealthCare voor de ondersteuning van het Garfield VTE Registry, die zal bouwen op onze ervaring voor een beter begrip van de reële uitdagingen van het toedienen van antistollingsmiddelen ter voorkoming van trombo-embolische beroertes in het Garfield AF Registery."
