Government Affairs Groups Play Critical Role in Protecting Organizations in Turbulent Times
Date:7/20/2012

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., July 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- During this period of political, economic and social turbulence, the Government Affairs function has become critical to protecting an organization's position in the marketplace. But the Government Affairs group and its subgroups – which include Federal, State, International Affairs and sometimes Public Policy – face myriad activities involving both internal and external partners.

To help pharmaceutical companies create and maintain an effective Government Affairs group, Best Practices, LLC conducted a research project to identify key Government Affairs structures, resources, services and priorities across the bio-pharmaceutical industry.

Some of the benchmarks to surface regarding Government Affairs structure, resourcing and responsibilities were:

  • Almost half of research participants - 47 percent - said their Government Affairs group reports to the CEO.
  • For critical services such as state, federal and international GA, the Government Affairs function places a high emphasis on clearly designating roles and responsibilities with both internal and external resources.
  • When Government Affairs budgets are examined in terms of investment per GA staffer (on a Full Time Equivalent or FTE basis), the average investment is $293,519 per Government Affairs staff member.

The report, Government Affairs & Public Policy Excellence: Optimizing Group Structure & Operations, contains an array of benchmarks regarding Government Affairs and Policy structure, resources and activities. The 75-page report contains 150 metrics and 28 narratives to help inform leaders in Government Affairs and Public Policy who are attempting to align their structure, resources and activities with corporate goals and internal customers' needs.
