46;rdineerde elektrische signalen uitzenden die ertoe leiden dat de hartkamers te snel en onregelmatig pompen, waardoor het bloed niet volledig uit het hart gepompt kan worden.(6) Als gevolg daarvan kunnen er stollingen in het bloed optreden, wat kan leiden tot trombose, de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak in zowel de ontwikkelde als de zich ontwikkelende wereld.

Als een bloedstolling het linkeratrium verlaat, kan die potentieel vast komen te zitten in een slagader in andere delen van het lichaam, met name in de hersenen. Een bloedstolling in een slagader in de hersenen leidt tot een beroerte. Tweeënnegentig procent van de fatale beroertes worden veroorzaakt door trombose.(7) Mensen met AF lopen ook een hoog risico op een hartverlamming, chronische moeheid en andere problemen met het hartritme.(8,9) Beroertes vormen wereldwijd ook een belangrijke oorzaak van langdurige invaliditeit – elk jaar raken 5 miljoen patiënten definitief invalide.(10)
