Gegevens over één jaar van wereldwijd register voor atriumfibrillatie (AF) tonen dat antitrombosemiddelen niet optimaal worden gebruikt ter voorkoming van beroertes

Onder patiënten die worden behandeld met vitamine K-antagonisten, omvatten de uitkomstgegevens tevens de frequentie en timing van de controles die vereist zijn om een veilig en therapeutisch effectief niveau van anticoagulatie te waarborgen en de ingrepen die nodig zijn om complicaties als gevolg van de anticoagulatietherapie te beheersen.

Het GARFIELD-register wordt mogelijk gemaakt door een onbeperkte onderzoekssubsidie van Bayer Pharma AG.

De belasting van AF
Tot 2% van de wereldbevolking heeft AF. Meer dan 6 miljoen Europeanen lijden aan deze ritmestoornis en volgens schattingen zal de verspreiding minstens verdubbeld zijn in 2050, omdat de bevolking ouder wordt. Ongeveer 4,5 miljoen mensen in de Europese Unie en 2,6 miljoen mensen in de Verenigde Staten hebben AF en schattingen geven aan dat in 2014 meer dan 12 miljoen mensen in de regio Azië-Stille Oceaan AF zullen hebben.(1,2,3,4) AF leidt tot een 5 keer zo groot risico op een beroerte en één op de vijf van alle beroertes kan worden toegeschreven aan deze ritmestoornis. Ischemische beroertes in combinatie met AF zijn vaak fataal en die patiënten die het wel overleven, krijgen vaker te maken met een ernstigere lichamelijke handicap en hebben een grotere kans op herhaling dan patiënten die een beroerte krijgen vanwege een andere oorzaak. Het gevolg is dat het risico op overlijden aan AF-gerelateerde beroertes twee keer zo groot is en dat de kosten van de zorg toenemen met 50%.(5) De aandoening doet zich voor wanneer delen van de atria ongeco
