Gegevens over één jaar van wereldwijd register voor atriumfibrillatie (AF) tonen dat antitrombosemiddelen niet optimaal worden gebruikt ter voorkoming van beroertes

  • Risico op beroerte/systemische embolie was vergelijkbaar voor beide groepen patiënten (HR=1,18, p=0,72)
  • Lager risico op beroerte en minder frequent gebruik van anticoagulantia in voor het eerst gediagnosticeerde AF-patiënten uit Azië vs. Europa
    • 28,7% (n=1.587) van de patiënten kwam uit Azië en 58,6% (n=3.237) kwam uit Europa
    • Gemiddeld waren de patiënten uit Azië in grotere mate mannelijk en jonger, en hadden ze een lagere body-mass index en minder comorbiditeiten dan patiënten uit Europa
    • Ongeacht het risiconiveau was het VKA-gebruik aanzienlijk hoger in Europa (61,4%) vs. Azië (35,8%), waarmee de substantiële verschillen in het gebruik van beschikbare therapieën ter voorkoming van beroertes nog eens worden benadrukt  
  • Minder frequent gebruik van VKA's onder patiënten met nieuwe vs. permanente AF, hoewel de kans op overlijden en beroerte voor de twee groepen vergelijkbaar is
    • 44,8% (n=2.477) van de patiënten had nieuwe AF vs. 14,2% (n=785) met permanente AF 
    • Gebruik van VKA's, alleen of in combinatie met trombocytenaggregatieremmers, was minder onder patiënten met nieuwe AF (52,1%) vs. permanente AF (61,0%)
    • Risico op beroerte/systemische embolie was 47% groter voor patiënten met permanente vs. nieuwe AF, hoewel dit verschil statistisch niet significant was (HR 1,47, p=0,36)
    • Nieuwe AF-patiënten waren iets jonger
