  • AF-patiënten met ritmecontrole hadden een 28% lager risico op overlijden (HR 0,72, p=0,041) vergeleken met patiënten voor wie frequentiecontrole werd toegepast
  • Patiënten met ritmecontrole waren jonger en hadden een lagere score voor het risico op een beroerte
  • De twee groepen verschilden in vele opzichten, dus er kan sprake zijn van andere complicerende variabelen die gevolgen hebben voor de bevinding
  • Hoger algeheel risicoprofiel voor AF-patiënten met coronaire hartziekte (CHZ)
    • 19,3% (n=1.066) van de patiënten in de studie hadden CHZ – deze patiënten waren ouder, in grotere mate mannelijk en werden in grotere mate behandeld met VKA's in combinatie met trombocytenaggregatieremmers dan patiënten zonder CHZ
    • AF-patiënten met CHZ hadden een meer dan twee keer zo groot risico op ACS dan patiënten zonder CHZ (HR 2,49, p=0,016) maar een vergelijkbaar risico op overlijden, beroerte/SE en ernstige bloedingen
  • Lagere mate van VKA-gebruik in patiënten met paroxismale AF vs. permanente AF ondanks een vergelijkbaar niveau van risico op een beroerte en systemische embolie
    • 24,4% (n=1.348) van de patiënten in de studie had paroxismale AF vs. 14,2% (n=785) met permanente AF
    • VKA's, alleen of in combinatie met trombocytenaggregatieremmers, werden gebruikt voor 39,1% van de paroxismale AF-patiënten en 61,0% van de permanente AF-patiënten
    • Risico op overlijden was 38%
