Frost & Sullivan Recognizes the Strong Adaptability of ActiveHealth's CareEngine Solution
Date:10/23/2013

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the US market for early intervention and general wellness technologies, Frost & Sullivan recognizes ActiveHealth Management (ActiveHealth®) with the 2013 United States Frost & Sullivan Technology Leadership Award for its CareEngine® System. This intuitive platform enables a smart approach to interventional care. Unlike existing analytics tools, ActiveHealth's system provides deep functionality that better flags gaps in care to help lower employer exposure to care costs, manage large populations and improve outcomes.

While most systems flag fairly rudimentary gaps such as lack of medication adherence, CareEngine's Clinical Decision Support presents approximately 5,000 specific clinical rules that can document and alert for higher-level gaps or undiagnosed conditions within a disease treatment program or even for general wellness monitoring.

"ActiveHealth's unique analytics solution provides exceptional value for engagement programs," said Frost & Sullivan Research Director Daniel Ruppar. "The company's strong focus on clinical measures and the adaptability of the CareEngine platform makes it one of the strongest technology solutions in the market.

CareEngine's architecture is built on an aggregation of approved clinical rules, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-covered protected health information (PHI), legacy claims and predictive algorithms that can be leveraged for simple population health analytics services, as well as for direct disease management and early intervention programs.

Early intervention is the new hybrid that incorporates the basic elements of outbound monitoring common to traditional disease management with tools that attempt to engage members and patients before they become chronically ill. What sets early intervention apart from disease management is an increased focus on preventive "population" analytics that utilize data to predict the likelihood for specific diseases, some self-reported and others from allowed legacy sources.

However, even with early intervention, the process of cost controls has been challenging as there are insufficient methods to properly rationalize multiple data points coming from the patient, managed care claims records, as well as patient health records.

ActiveHealth addresses these shortcomings with its clinical stratification and identification (CSID) tool, which employs a smart system that draws and merges self-reported healthcare research and analytics (HRA) and claims data. It additionally generates degrees of risk stratification across specific condition areas to help assess not only the type of intervention required for particular individuals, but also associated costs.

"Most traditional disease management programs suffer from poor program adherence or drop-off, which adversely affect not only individual outcomes, but also the broad average improvement statistics for the program," noted Ruppar. "By potentially piggybacking a tailored solution for individuals, the new intervention model could experience both greater adoption and long-term adherence, which is the standard by which most effective programs should be judged."

ActiveHealth is a part of Aetna's Healthagen, which is expected to be a major player in broad-scale population health programs, both through Aetna as well as independently through providers and other national and regional plan systems. Frost & Sullivan expects this to give ActiveHealth the ability to not only deliver its solutions effectively, but also tweak the analytics through access to large-scale claims and multi-point data sources.

Among all its peers in the market, ActiveHealth has made one of the most sizeable investments in its core analytics solution and now is well-positioned to deliver deep clinical care management nationally. Overall, ActiveHealth's unique analytics solutions provide exceptional value for engagement programs in the managed care and employer markets.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies, which significantly impacts both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award highlights the high R&D spend toward innovation, its relevance to the industry and the positive impact on brand perception.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
