Express Scripts Study Reveals Keys to Controlling Specialty Drug Costs
Date:3/7/2013

In addition, hepatitis C virus (HCV), while having a relatively low per-member-per-year cost of $7.82, is the highest trending therapeutic category at 28.9 percent and is expected to increase rapidly with new therapy regimens and screening guidelines being implemented.

Nearly 50 percent of specialty drug costs are billed on the medical side of the plan benefit, where it is difficult to apply the various pharmacy benefit solutions that can effectively drive down costs.

Express Scripts, combining innovation from subsidiaries CuraScript and Accredo specialty pharmacies, is applying a unique new platform, Health Decision ScienceSM, to enable cost-effective, clinically appropriate health decisions that deliver improved patient care while reducing waste.

Express Scripts' comprehensive specialty offering, Specialty Benefit Services, includes clinical specialization through Accredo's disease-specific Therapeutic Resource Centers — where specialized pharmacists, nurses and other caregivers provide comprehensive patient care — clinically based formulary design, pharmacy-network and utilization-management solutions, and most importantly, a medical benefit-management solution that provides complete visibility into specialty drug spend, allowing for coordinated trend management by integrating both the pharmacy and medical data.

"Combining behavioral science with clinical specialization and actionable data creates an environment where the best health decisions become the easier decision for the patients, caregivers and health providers to make," Stettin said.
