Enhance Perioperative & Anesthesia Consulting Develops Indices To Measure Hospital Operating Room Efficiency, Costs, Other Key Standards

AVENTURA, Fla., July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Enhance Perioperative & Anesthesia Consulting (EPAC), a consulting firm that helps hospitals, health systems, and academic medical centers nationwide increase Operating Room efficiency, profitability and operational intelligence, today announced it has developed a range of indices to measure the level of hospitals' Operating Room efficiency, costs and other key standards.

The company developed the indices after it collected and analyzed perioperative intelligence from hospitals across the U.S. Currently available tools include:

  • Anesthesia Subsidy Value Index
  • Anesthesia Supply Cost Index
  • Anesthesia Expense Index
  • OR Utilization or Efficiency Index

The "Anesthesia Subsidy Value Index" survey is now available at no cost to healthcare organizations and can be accessed on the company's website, Developed by board-certified anesthesiologists, the survey allows hospitals to benchmark their subsidy data against EPAC's database of over 50 hospitals.

"On average, anesthesia subsidies cost U.S. hospitals approximately $140,000/OR annually," says Dr. Howard Greenfield, Principal of EPAC. "Benchmarking data is critical to determine a hospital's level of performance as well as a point of reference for setting improvement goals."

Typically, the OR generates 70 percent of a hospital's total revenue. As reimbursements shrink, healthcare leaders are looking for every advantage to optimize this service line.

"Healthcare reform mandates hospitals improve efficiency and clinical quality," says Dr. Robert Stiefel, Principal of EPAC. "These data-driven reports provide invaluable information. Hospital leaders can use this data to make informed business decisions related to targeted perioperative issues, so they can meet the challenges of healthcare reform and thrive financially."
