Elaborado por un grupo internacional de 80 líderes de opinión en el ámbito del asma

  • 300 millones de pacientes sufren asma en la actualidad
  • Los cálculos indican que esa cifra habrá aumentado hasta 400 millones para 2025
  • El objetivo del Atlas mundial del asma consiste en proporcionar una plataforma de planificación estratégica para esta enfermedad con el fin de adoptar un planteamiento integral para la investigación, la formación y las políticas internacionales en múltiples ámbitos

El asma constituye un grave problema de salud pública que afecta a 300 millones de pacientes en todo el mundo. Su prevalencia y su impacto están aumentando especialmente en las regiones urbanizadas y se está expandiendo por todo el mundo, asociada a los cambios producidos en el medio ambiente y en el estilo de vida. Dado el aumento previsto en la población urbana mundial para 2025, se calcula que otros 100 millones de personas padecerán asma, además de quienes ya la sufren en la actualidad. Esto la convierte en la enfermedad infantil crónica más prevalente, y representa una de las partidas más importantes de los gastos sanitarios.

Existen numerosos factores económicos y políticos que influyen en la eficiencia de la prevención del asma. Entre dichos factores se encuentran la pobreza, las deficiencias educativas y de infraestructuras, la escasa prioridad asignada en salud pública y la falta de datos mundiales sólidos sobre morbi-mortalidad como consecuencia del asma.
