Diagnostic Imaging Covers Advice for Young Radiologists
Date:4/29/2013

NORWALK, Conn., April 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that Diagnostic Imaging, a leading online publication for news and commentary of the medical imaging market, explored advice for young radiologists from luminaries in the field.

Radiology residents are entering the industry at a unique and challenging time. To help provide insights for their budding careers, Diagnostic Imaging reached out for words of wisdom from well-known radiology leaders in the hospital, private practice, and academic settings. In their own words, they shared their diverse and pertinent advice:

For example:

  • James H. Thrall , MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital said, "More than ever, radiologists now need to be active participants in their institutions beyond interpreting imaging studies and be regarded as good citizens in their institutions. Hospitals are looking for team-oriented physicians who understand organizational needs in care coordination, quality and safety and operational efficiency among other topics."
  • Richard B. Gunderman, MD, PhD, of Indiana University, said: "We need to remember what it's like for our patients. The diagnoses we make, we find them in medical text books and they have diagnostic classifications and billing categories, but our ultimate mission is to remember what all this means to our patients."
  • M. Elizabeth Oates , MD, president of the American Association for Women Radiologists, said, "Mentors are key. Mentors can see your potential and can help you develop that potential through insightful guidance and by seeking/responding to opportunities with you in mind."

Other luminaries included in the feature are: Saurabh Jha, MD, of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; Paul Molina , MD, of the University of North Carolina; Aparna Annam, DO, of Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital; Arl Van Moore Jr., MD, of Strategic Radiology and Charlotte Radiology; Lawrence Muroff, MD, of Imaging Consultants Inc.; and Richard Woodcock , MD, of Northwest Radiology Consultants.

In a video interview included in the feature, Diagnostic Imaging spoke with Norman J. Beauchamp, MD, president of the American Roentgen Ray Society. Beauchamp offered advice on how to best recruit a mentor, suggesting radiologists find what skills they can offer a mentor to help build the relationship. "Find a mentor, recruit a mentor, and work closely with them," he said, "It's essential."
