  • Teilnehmende Patienten wurden innerhalb der vergangenen sechs Wochen mit nicht-valvulärem VF diagnostiziert und wiesen mindestens ein zusätzliches Risiko für einen Schlaganfall auf. Damit sind sie potentielle Kandidaten für eine Antikoagulanzientherapie, um Blutgerinnsel zu vermeiden, die einen Schlaganfall zur Folge haben können. Es obliegt dem klinischen Urteil des Studienleiters, den Risikofaktor/die Risikofaktoren des einzelnen Patienten zu bestimmen, die sich nicht nur auf die in den etablierten Risikoscores beschränken. Patienten werden unabhängig davon, ob sie eine Antikoagulanzientherapie erhalten oder nicht, in die Studie aufgenommen. Dies ermöglicht es, aktuelle und zukünftige Behandlungsstrategien und Therapieversagen vollständig unter Berücksichtigung des individuellen Risikoprofils des Patienten zu verstehen.

    Das GARFIELD-AF-Register wird von einen unbegrenzten Forschungsfonds von Bayer Pharma AG finanziert.

    Bis zu 2 % der Weltbevölkerung leiden unter VF.[1] Etwa 6 Millionen Menschen in Europa[8], 3 bis 5 Millionen in den USA[9],[10] und bis zu 8 Millionen in China haben VF.[11],[12] Die Pävalenz wird sich vermutlich bis 2050 verdoppeln, da die Menschen immer älter werden.
