Das heutige Verständnis von VF basiert auf den bei kontrollierten klinischen Studien gesammelten Daten. Diese Studien sind wesentlich für die Bewertung und Sicherheit von neuen Behandlungsmethoden, sind aber in Bezug auf die klinische Praxis nicht repräsentativ, und folglich herrscht weiterhin Unsicherheit über die Belastung im wirklichen Leben und das Management dieser Krankheit.  GARFIELD-AF zielt darauf ab, Einblicke in die Wirkung der Antikoagulanzientherapie hinsichtlich thromboembolischer Komplikationen und Blutungskomplikationen, die bei dieser Patientenpopulation beobachtet wurden, zu liefern. Es sorgt für ein tieferes Verständnis in Bezug auf Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten der behandlungstechnischen und klinischen Ergebnisse unter einer repräsentativen und gemischten Patientengruppe und über unterschiedliche Populationen hinweg. Damit sollten Ärzte und Gesundheitssysteme in die Lage versetzt werden, Innovationen angemessen zu nutzen, um die besten Ergebnisse für Patienten und Populationen sicherzustellen.

Das Register startete im Dezember 2009. Vier wesentliche Design-Merkmale des GARFIELD-AF-Protokolls garantieren eine umfassende und repräsentative Beschreibung von VF:

  • Fünf aufeinanderfolgende Kohorten von prospektiven, neu-diagnostizierten Patienten, die Vergleiche von einzelnen Zeiträumen erleichtern und die Behandlungsverläufe und Ergebnisse beschreiben.
  • Studienstandorte, die zufällig innerhalb von achtsam zugewiesenen nationalen VF-Pflegeeinrichtungen ausgewählt wurden, stellen sicher, dass die teilnehmende Patientenpopulation repräsentativ ist.
