TVP) e l'embolia polmonare (EP) costituiscono due sottotipi di TEV. La TVP è la coagulazione del sangue in qualsiasi punto delle vene profonde delle gambe, della pelvi o delle braccia. La EP è causata da un coagulo che si distacca dalla vena e viaggia fino ai polmoni, depositandosi nelle arterie polmonari e causando una condizione clinica potenzial-mente mortale. La EP si associa spesso alla TVP, che a sua volta può improvvisamente diventare una EP.

I pazienti con una diagnosi di TEV sono trattati per 3, 6 o 12 mesi (ed alcune volte anche di più) a seconda del profilo individuale di rischio di prevenire una seconda TVP o EP.

La TEV è una delle cause maggiori di morbilità e mortalità al mondo, e l'incidenza annuale di TEV è stimata in un range fra 1 e 3 ogni 1.000 individui al mondo. La TEV colpisce annualmente più di 750.000 pazienti in Francia, Germania, Italia, Spagna, Svezia e Gran Bretagna, con una mortalità correlata di circa 370.000 individui. Negli Stati Uniti si stimano circa 900.000 eventi TEV all'anno, sia fatali che non fatali, e circa 300.000 morti all'anno. Si stima che l'incidenza della TEV raddoppierà entro il 2050.  

La TEV è causa di importante mortalità: il 30% delle persone con TEV muore entro un mese dalla diagnosi e il 25% circa di quelli con EP va incontro a morte improvvisa. In aggiunta, il 30% circa di quelli affetti sperimenterà una recidiva di TVP/EP entro 10 anni dalla diagnosi iniziale.

Edoxaban

Edoxaban è stato  autorizzato in Giappone per la prevenzione delle trombembolie venose in pazienti sottoposti a chirurgia ortopedica maggiore, con il nome commerciale di Lixiana®. In tutte le altre nazioni edoxaban è nella fase 3 di sviluppo clinico.
