Costs of Care Presents Inaugural Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Healthcare CEO to Dr. Gary S. Kaplan at The Leapfrog Group Annual Awards Dinner
Date:12/5/2018

The inaugural Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Healthcare CEO was presented to Gary S. Kaplan, M.D., Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle, Washington, at The Leapfrog Group’s annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. tonight.

The award was created by Costs of Care, a leading non-profit dedicated to curating and disseminating insights from the frontlines of health care to help delivery systems provide better care at lower cost, to recognize a hospital and/or health system CEO who has demonstrated courageous and ethical leadership addressing the twin issues of affordability and quality of health care in their community. The Steven Schroeder Award is part of Costs of Care’s annual Value Challenge – launched in partnership with the ABIM Foundation - that aims to inspire and share innovations among collaborative teams of clinicians, educators, quality improvement specialists, and health system administrators from around the country.

“We are thrilled to recognize a visionary CEO who is leading the way to ensure care is not only safe and effective, but also affordable, “ said Neel Shah, MD, Founder and Executive Director of Costs of Care. “It is particularly meaningful to be doing so in Steven Schroeder’s name.”

The Outstanding Healthcare CEO award is named in honor of Steven Schroeder, MD, Distinguished Professor of Health and Health Care at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and former President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Schroeder has spent five decades inspiring and mentoring leaders to forcefully advocate for better quality and more affordable health care, and has inspired leaders of both Costs of Care and The Leapfrog Group.

“Congratulations to Dr. Gary Kaplan, who has demonstrated during his distinguished career that hospitals can achieve both affordability and high standards of quality of care,” said Dr. Schroeder.

Dr. Kaplan is a practicing internal medicine physician who has served as Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO since 2000. “I have the privilege to lead a diverse team at Virginia Mason that is committed to transforming health care by continually improving how we serve our patients and providing the highest quality, safest care at the lowest cost,” said Dr. Kaplan. “I am tremendously honored to receive the Steven Schroeder Award. It affirms we are focused on the right work at Virginia Mason and are truly making a difference for our patients, and patients everywhere.”

“The greatest health system leaders stop at nothing to do the right thing for their patients,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “With this award we’re excited to recognize a CEO who fights for the highest quality, safest care. Steven Schroeder taught us that in health care, better quality can lower costs, and we want to recognize the leaders who are showing us how.”
