Chile, U.S. Strengthen Ties, Commitment to Quality Medicines

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Further strengthening a mutual commitment to improving the quality and safety of medicines in Chile and in the United States, the Chilean Pharmacopoeia Foundation (CPF) and the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU is designed to increase awareness of the importance of the quality and safety of medicines; promote cooperation between CPF and USP; and identify areas of mutual interest and potential collaboration. Professor Marcela Escobar, CPF's directory president, and Dr. Roger L. Williams, USP's chief executive officer, signed the MOU during a ceremony at USP's headquarters in Rockville, Md.

USP and CPF publish pharmacopeias used in their respective countries. As a scientific, nonprofit organization, USP develops standards for the quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements. USP medicines standards are legally enforceable by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are also used by manufacturers and regulators in more than 130 countries. The CPF is a private, independent organization responsible for setting quality standards and specifications for medicines in Chile. CPF's standards are legally enforceable in Chile by the National Agency of Medicines (ANAMED) which is part of the Public Health Institute (ISP).
