Chile, U.S. Strengthen Ties, Commitment to Quality Medicines
Date:11/9/2011

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Further strengthening a mutual commitment to improving the quality and safety of medicines in Chile and in the United States, the Chilean Pharmacopoeia Foundation (CPF) and the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU is designed to increase awareness of the importance of the quality and safety of medicines; promote cooperation between CPF and USP; and identify areas of mutual interest and potential collaboration. Professor Marcela Escobar, CPF's directory president, and Dr. Roger L. Williams, USP's chief executive officer, signed the MOU during a ceremony at USP's headquarters in Rockville, Md.

USP and CPF publish pharmacopeias used in their respective countries. As a scientific, nonprofit organization, USP develops standards for the quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements. USP medicines standards are legally enforceable by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are also used by manufacturers and regulators in more than 130 countries. The CPF is a private, independent organization responsible for setting quality standards and specifications for medicines in Chile. CPF's standards are legally enforceable in Chile by the National Agency of Medicines (ANAMED) which is part of the Public Health Institute (ISP).

"The pharmaceutical industry has grown into a complex global network, making partnerships between official standards setting bodies increasingly important to help ensure the quality of medicines," said Dr. Williams. "I am pleased to further strengthen this network by formalizing our partnership and look forward to working with CPF in efforts to protect and improve public health."

"Chile and the United States share the common goal of improving the quality of medicines in both of our countries, and in the region, and it is our hope that this partnership will help us do just that," said Professor Escobar. "This is an exciting alliance and one that I am certain will be fruitful for both pharmacopeias and the patients and practitioners we serve."

The MOU details potential areas of collaboration between the two pharmacopeias such as the development of reference materials for testing to demonstrate compliance with pharmacopeial standards; adoption or adaptation of the United States Pharmacopeia—National Formulary (USP—NF) and the Chilean Pharmacopeia; and the exchange of scientific staff and information through programs such as joint meetings and courses, visiting scientists and publications.
