Change in Accounting for Convertible Debt Securities

In May 2008, the FASB issued a new accounting standard related to convertible debt instruments that may be settled in cash upon conversion. Under this standard, such convertible debt securities would be separated into a debt and equity component. This change in principle, which was effective for us as of January 1, 2009, was applied retrospectively to previously issued convertible debt instruments. The adoption of this new accounting standard increased our 2008 and 2007 non-cash interest expense by approximately $13 million per year, resulting in a reduction of our diluted earnings per share by approximately $0.12 in 2008 and 2007.
