SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Baxano, Inc. (www.baxano.com) today announced that two of the company's products have been selected Best New Technology for Spine Care at the 2010 Spine Technology Awards. The iO-Flex™ System and the MicroBlade Shaver™ Device both received first place in the Best New Technology in Lumbar Care.

The awards were announced last night at the 2010 Spine Technology Awards Gala in Orlando, FL. Baxano, Inc. was awarded two top prizes of the eight total awarded across all categories. 23 companies submitted medical technologies to be judged on originality, clinical relevance, and the likelihood of improving current standards of care. The panel of six judges included private and academic spine surgeons and clinical buyers for leading spine care facilities.

"From our founder's initial concept in 2005 to the commercially-available product helping patients across the US today, our exceptional engineering team has kept its focus on providing novel minimally-invasive instruments for unmet surgical needs," said Tony Recupero, President and CEO of Baxano, Inc. "We are delighted that the independent board of judges chose both Baxano's iO-Flex System and the MicroBlade Shaver Device for top prize. This award further validates our industry-leading value proposition for all stakeholders in today's cost-effective healthcare environment."

About the Spine Technology Awards:

Presented by Orthopedics This Week and RRY Publications, the Spine Technology Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary and innovative spine surgery products and the engineering teams and inventors who create them. Patients, physicians, hospitals and reimbursers rely on the inspiration and perspiration of engineers and surgeon-inventors to improve outcomes and to control costs. Most engineers and inventors are little known so we proudly provide these awards in eight separate categories of spine care and an annual gala banquet to recognize their great talents and contributions. Technologies that are eligible for a Spine Technology Award must be any device, pharmaceutical or biologic product that was developed to improve the care of patients with spine disease.

About Baxano, Inc.

Based in San Jose, CA, Baxano, Inc., (www.BAXANO.com) is focused on developing innovative solutions that restore spine function, preserve healthy tissue, and enable a better quality of life for patients. Baxano, Inc. is the developer of the iO-Flex™ System which is an advancement in surgical technology for central, lateral recess and foraminal lumbar stenosis. This unique technology uses thin, flexible instruments through an open exposure or a minimally invasive tube to provide precision lumbar decompression from the "inside out" ("iO"). This "over the wire" approach allows surgeons to address targeted impinging tissue with a non-implant, direct decompression, while preserving facet joint integrity. Up to four nerve roots may be decompressed through a single-point access using this system.
