Anoto Digital Pen and Paper Facilitating Adoption of Meaningful Use Certified Electronic Health Record Technology
Date:6/19/2012

WESTBOROUGH, Mass., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Anoto, the world leader in digital pen and paper technology, today announced that its digital writing solutions are being increasingly utilized by healthcare providers to input structured data into a patient's electronic health record (EHR) directly from paper. The result is the adoption of Meaningful Use certified EHRs across a range of areas including hospitals, ambulatory care facilities and physician practices.

Anoto operates through a network of partners that work with healthcare organizations as they make the transition to electronic health records. Currently, Anoto partners that meet Meaningful Use requirements include organizations such as NextGen Healthcare, Rover Technology Fusions, Shareable Ink and Nightingale Informatix Corp./ExpeData's Clinipen™ technology. Because of this certification, healthcare providers can use digital pen and paper to help satisfy Meaningful Use requirements.

"This technology is a good option since it doesn't force a new behavior; you're simply leveraging something familiar – pen and paper," said Pietro Parravicini, senior vice president area manager Americas for Anoto. "By giving practitioners a solution that is both mobile and easy to use to collect and enter required patient data, Meaningful Use can evolve more naturally as part of standard practices."

Today, 80 percent of physicians still rely on traditional pen and paper to capture patient information. Digital pen and paper offers a simple, alternative way to capture data into EHR systems. The costs associated with training and workflow interruption are dramatically reduced when using a data capture method that is as straightforward as pen and paper. In addition, there is no intrusion into the doctor/patient communication that can result with other kinds of technologies.

Anoto technology includes the Anoto digital pen and the Anoto dot pattern.  The digital pen is Bluetooth-enabled and contains a tiny digital camera under the tip of the pen that takes pictures at 70 times per second as the user writes.  When medical staff fills out paper forms, the handwritten information is recorded onto a chip in the digital pen. When the form is completed, the data in the pen is transferred via a USB docking station or through Bluetooth transmission. The handwritten information is converted into electronic data and uploaded into any one of a wide variety of applications developed by Anoto partners.  Usually handwriting recognition software is then applied.  This translates the handwriting into machine-readable data, which can then be imported easily into any EHR or other back-end systems.
