Announcing a New Regional Approach to Medicare Quality Improvement

CHARLESTON, W.Va., July 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded a new five-state Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) contract to a partnership led by the West Virginia Medical Institute (WVMI).

Effective August 1, WVMI will launch Quality Insights Quality Innovation Network in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Louisiana.  The Network will engage providers and the community in multiple, data-driven quality initiatives to improve patient safety, reduce harm, and improve clinical care. 

In addition to WVMI, the Network partners are WVMI's affiliated companies, Quality Insights of Pennsylvania and Quality Insights of Delaware, Healthcare Quality Strategies, Inc. (NJ), and eQHealth Solutions (LA). 

Each company currently serves as a Medicare Quality Improvement Organization and supported providers and community members in their respective states.  Staff offer skills and assistance in transforming practice, employing lean methodologies, assisting with value based purchasing programs, and developing innovative approaches to quality improvement.

QIN-QIOs are part of CMS's restructuring of the QIO program to improve care for beneficiaries, families and caregivers.  Historically, CMS issued 53 QIO contracts, one for each state and territory, to provide both case review and quality improvement support services.  The new structure is regional and establishes two groups of QIOs—one group for quality improvement (QIN-QIOs) and one for Medicare quality of care complaints and appeals (Beneficiary and Family Centered Care QIOs).   For the latest information, visit
