American Physician Partners Expands Presence in Texas with the Acquisition of Leading Edge Medical Associates
Date:6/18/2019

Officials with American Physician Partners (APP), a leader in emergency medicine and hospital medicine management services, are pleased to announce the acquisition of Leading Edge Medical Associates (LEMA), a long-standing emergency department management company based in Longview, Texas.

LEMA’s 34 physicians and 9 advanced practice clinicians care for 115,000 emergency department patients annually in the following CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System (GSHS) facilities:

  • CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center–Longview, a Level II Trauma Center and teaching facility where medical students and Internal Medicine residents rotate through the Emergency Department
  • CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center–Marshall, a designated Level III Trauma Center that hosts third-year residents from the LSU-Shreveport Emergency Medicine residency program
  • CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center–NorthPark
  • CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center–Kilgore

Managing partners Drs. Stan Upchurch and John DiPasquale founded LEMA in 1998 and both have served on the board of directors of GSHS. For the past 21 years, LEMA has played an integral leadership role in both the medical centers and the community, with four of their physicians having served as chief of staff throughout the system and several serving as physician leaders for indigent health clinics throughout East Texas. The group of board certified physicians enjoys a strong relationship with the system and community and boasts a 95 percent retention rate.

“We are grateful that LEMA and CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System have recognized American Physician Partners’ reputation as a premier provider of emergency medicine management services for community facilities, high-volume trauma centers, and teaching programs,” said John Rutledge, president and CEO of American Physician Partners. “In our continuous pursuit of excellence in emergency medicine, we are excited to partner with LEMA’s quality team to care for the emergency department patients throughout the East Texas community.”

“We were impressed with American Physician Partners’ strong growth in the Texas market and their significant experience with high-volume emergency departments,” said Stan Upchurch, M.D. “Their demonstrated expertise in emergency department operations combined with their patient-centric culture and ongoing commitment to performance improvement were key factors when selecting a partner that matched our values. We are also excited to gain the practice support resources that will enable us to continue to deliver excellence in emergency care to our patients throughout East Texas."
