riorität ab. Die weltweite Prioritätsliste spiegelt jedoch nicht unbedingt das wahre Ausmaß einer Krankheit wieder. Dies hat dazu geführt, dass die Bekämpfungsmaßnahmen und die Folgen bestimmter Krankheiten im falschen Verhältnis zueinander stehen und manchen Krankheiten viel zu wenig Bedeutung beigemessen wird. Die Virushepatitis ist ein klares Beispiel dafür. Trotz der schlimmen Folgen gibt es weltweit kaum Druck, die Bekämpfung zu intensivieren. Folglich stellen die meisten Regierungen kaum finanzielle Mittel für die Bekämpfung der Virushepatitis zur Verfügung, auch nicht in Ländern, in denen die Häufigkeit 20 % beträgt.

Der in der letzten Woche veröffentlichte WHO-Bericht zeigt, in welchem Umfang die Virushepatitis vernachlässigt wird. Lediglich 37 % aller Länder verfügen über einen nationalen Strategieplan zur Bekämpfung der Virushepatitis, und weniger als 30 % gaben an, ein eigenes Zentrum für Virushepatitis eingerichtet zu haben. Die fehlende Bekämpfung der achthäufigsten Todesursache weltweit ist verblüffend. Indem der Epidemie Raum gegeben wird, sich schleichend auszubreiten, werden nicht nur Millionen Menschenleben riskiert. Auch die 500 Millionen chronisch infizierten Patienten werden mit ihrer Erkrankung allein gelassen.

2010 erkannte die Weltgesundheitsorganisation die Virushepatitis offen als großes Gesundheitsproblem an und machte den Welt-Hepatitis-Tag zu einem von nur sieben Weltgesundheitstagen, die offiziell von der WHO und allen Mitgliedsstaaten anerkannt sind. Dennoch hat es in den öffentlichen Gesundheitssystemen bislang keine großen Veränderungen diesbezüglich gegeben.
