Die World Hepatitis Alliance ruft dringend dazu auf, gegen eine Krankheit vorzugehen, an der ebenso viele Menschen sterben wie an HIV/AIDS

Am Welt-Hepatitis-Tag hat die World Hepatitis Alliance auf jüngste Zahlen aufmerksam gemacht, die belegen, dass die Mehrheit der Länder kein Programm zur Bekämpfung von Virushepatitis entwickelt hat, obwohl an der Krankheit ebenso viele Patienten sterben wie an HIV/AIDS.

Die WHO-Studie über die globalen Folgen von Krankheit, die letztes Jahr in dem Magazin Lancet veröffentlicht worden war, zeigt, dass die Virushepatitis 2010 zu fast 1,45 Millionen Todesfällen geführt hat. Das sind ebenso viele wie bei HIV/AIDS und deutlich mehr als bei TB oder Malaria. Trotz dieser hohen Sterberaten beschäftigen sich die Entscheidungsträger weltweiter Gesundheitssysteme kaum mit der Krankheit.

"Die Virushepatitis ist die achthäufigste Todesursache weltweit. Jedes Jahr sterben an ihr ebenso viele Menschen wie an HIV/AIDS", erklärte Charles Gore, Präsident der World Hepatitis Alliance. "500 Millionen Menschen sind chronisch infiziert. Wie kann es angesichts dieser Zahlen sein, dass der Krankheit weltweit so wenig Bedeutung zugemessen wird?"
