AltaPointe Health Working to Improve Patient's Quality of Life Through Fitness

AltaPointe Health is taking part in an evidence-based program to help its adult residential services’ patients Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL). At the core of the SAIL program is the belief that performing exercises that improve strength, balance, and fitness can help adults stay active and reduce their chances of falling.

Twenty-three AltaPointe staff members participated in training to earn their SAIL Program Leader certificate. Once certified, they will be able to lead group fitness classes each week. Lessons are based on the participant’s level of ability. All program leaders are carefully selected for their ability to deliver effective and efficient training while adhering to the core components of the SAIL program.

Patricia McNair, assistant director adult residential services, was instrumental in bringing the program to AltaPointe. McNair says it will not only help residents build muscle but improve their basic living skills. “I am excited about this program and its potential to improve our residents’ quality of life,” McNair said.

AltaPointe Health plans to implement the SAIL program in its southern region first which includes Mobile County. David Beech, director adult residential services, says “the program complements the move to measurement-based care. SAIL is more than fitness; it’s about outcomes. It will deliver outcomes we can measure such as fitness ability and attendance, among other factors.” Beech said.

The Washington State Health Department developed the SAIL program. SAIL leaders will work with AltaPointe Health staff in the coming year to ensure a successful uptake of the program, and to complete additional training with two staff members who will become the “master trainers” for the SAIL program at AltaPointe Health.
