AdvaMed 2011: The MedTech Conference Closing Day Features Life Changing Innovation, Policymaker Addresses

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AdvaMed 2011: The MedTech Conference -- day three -- highlights more than 90 exhibitors including Abbott, Abiomed, B. Braun Medical, Baxter International Inc., CORPAK MedSystems, Covidien, Johnson & Johnson, KCI, and MIT MEDRC in Innovation Alley, a showcase of life changing medical device and diagnostic technologies. Three sector meet-ups focused on orthopedic, wound management and cardiovascular technologies, and two CEOs Unplugged panels focused on competitiveness and policy matters also will take place on the exhibit hall floor today.

The morning plenary address will open with AdvaMed Executive Committee Member Joe Almeida, president and CEO of Covidien, as he introduces John Taylor, Counselor to the FDA Commissioner, and Dr. Jeffery Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. AdvaMed Board Member David Perez, Chairman of the Board, Terumo Global Blood Management Business and President & CEO, Combined Terumo Transfusion & CaridianBCT Businesses, will moderate an early morning dialogue with these officials after their plenary remarks.  In the afternoon, Stephen MacMillan, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stryker Corporation and a member of the AdvaMed Executive Committee, will introduce the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Followed by Chairman of the AdvaMed Dx Board Vincent Forlenza, President and COO of BD, one of the world's largest manufacturers of medical products, laboratory equipment and diagnostics, who will introduce Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.

Panels focused on the legal, reimbursement, regulatory and emerging growth company topics will take place throughout the day. The state of medical technology funding by the VC, angel and private equity, the Patent Reform Act of 2011, the impact of provider consolidation on the medical technology industry, how new and impending medical device excise taxes may impact the industry, and the crafting of a UDI system, will all be topics of discussion today.
