Acorn Stairlifts Gives a Lift to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Date:8/27/2014

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- By now, if you haven't heard about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, you're likely not living on this planet. The awareness campaign has brought this devastating disease to the forefront of social consciousness and has helped to raise over $88.5 Million (and counting) for ALS. Every day, more and more people are getting involved and some companies are starting to as well.

One such company, Acorn Stairlifts Inc., based in Orlando, Florida, who actually works with ALS sufferers and helps to provide solutions for them every week; decided to get involved with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. On August 22, 2014, the management team challenged all employees of the company to accept the challenge… and then they accepted the challenge themselves. For every employee that accepted the challenge, or made a donation, the company would donate $20.00 to ALS.

"When I first started with Acorn Stairlifts over 10 years ago as a sales rep, one of my first customer interactions was with a woman suffering from ALS," says Tim McCool, VP of Sales & Marketing at Acorn Stairlifts Inc. "She had to be carried up the stairs just to use the restroom. I sat and talked with her for over an hour and it was one of the most touching moments of my life. It's stuck with me all these years and it's why I'm so committed to what we do to improve people's lives. So, when the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge started catching steam, I just knew that we had to get involved."

After countless buckets of ice water had doused the employees of Acorn Stairlifts and many of their family members; the company helped raise $5,000 for ALS Research, not including the individual donations from the employees themselves.

"It was incredible to see the response of everyone. There was just a buzz, an energy within all of us that you could really feel in the building and with our staff across the country" McCool says. "I look forward to doing more things like this in the future."
