AHN Chief Medical Information Officer Robert White, MD, Named a “CIO of the Year” by Pittsburgh Technology Council
Date:3/26/2019

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Chief Medical Information Officer Robert White, MD, FAAFP, has been selected by the Pittsburgh Technology Council as a CIO of the Year.

Dr. White was one of six information technology leaders to be honored at the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s “CIO of the Year” awards ceremony, which was held at the Westin Convention Center Hotel on March 21. The annual event honors the region’s top chief information officers and chief information security officers.

Dr. White was honored in the “terabyte,” or large company, category.

“We at AHN are thrilled that Dr. White is being recognized by industry peers for his outstanding leadership, and for the remarkable work he’s done over the last three years to help transform our organization,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, AHN’s president and Chief Executive Officer. “He and his team are helping us build one of the nation’s most integrated, technologically advanced health care organizations and this distinguished honor couldn’t be more deserved.”

As CMIO at AHN, Dr. White leads the design and execution of the network’s clinical information technology strategy. He also directs the implementation of AHN’s Epic electronic health record system, which allows clinicians to share and review patient records at each of AHN’s clinical locations, including its eight hospitals. AHN is now the first health system in Western Pennsylvania to utilize a single IT platform for all of its patient data management, providing clinicians with a platform that promotes the highest level of care coordination and optimization.

In his role, Dr. White champions and leads the adoption of technology solutions that enhance patient engagement, health care access, telemedicine, and population health management across the network. Since his arrival at AHN in 2016, the network has implemented a variety of patient-facing tools and portals, such as MyChart Bedside, a tablet-based Epic tool that allows patients to manage a wide range of tasks (such as viewing test results, messaging members of the care team, and even ordering hospital meals), and Video Visits, a portal that allows patients to consult with clinicians via teleconference using their personal smartphone, tablet or computer.

As a result of these advances and others, six AHN hospitals were honored in 2018 as some of America’s “Most Wired” hospitals by the by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). Most Wired® designation is the industry-leading benchmark on IT adoption and innovation in health systems across the country.

“Accolades like these are testament to Dr. White’s guidance and vision,” Ms. Hundorfean said. “He has transformed AHN into a network that is on the forefront when it comes to adopting innovative IT technologies that improve patient care, engagement, experience, and safety.”

Prior to joining AHN, Dr. White was the Associate CMIO at Cleveland Clinic. He earned a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Health Sciences at The Chicago Medical School in Illinois, and he also holds a BS in biochemistry from Northern Illinois University. He is board certified in Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is also a member of the Physician Advisory Board for the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) of North America.

Pittsburgh Technology Council’s “CIO of the Year” ceremony, cohosted by the Greater Pittsburgh CIO Group, is now in its 16th year.

“This is our annual opportunity to recognize and honor the hard work of CIOs and CISOs for their accomplishments at the biggest celebratory event of the year honoring these unspoken heroes of the IT world,” said Pittsburgh Technology Council President and CEO Audrey Russo.
