Date:2/23/2011

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Omnicell, Inc., (Nasdaq: OMCL) a leading provider of medication management systems to healthcare facilities, today announced the results of a survey conducted at HIMSS 2011. 100 healthcare executives were polled to identify trends in requirements for vendor interoperability and factors motivating hospital IT purchasing decisions. The survey found that the majority of hospitals recognize the critical role interoperability plays in improving patient care.

The survey results identified the following trends as top concerns among hospital IT leaders attending HIMSS:

  • The interoperability of multiple vendor systems within a hospital's IT infrastructure is deemed critical to operational effectiveness by 75 percent of hospital IT leadership.
  • 38 percent of hospitals are changing the way they purchase, distribute and manage medication and supplies due to financial pressures.
  • When considering system maintenance, costs and patient care, 66 percent identified patient centered care as the most important criteria when investing in IT resources to improve systems-based interoperability within a facility.

"It is exciting to see that over 75 percent of hospital IT leadership identified that interoperability in a hospital's IT infrastructure is critical to hospital operational effectiveness," said Marga Ortigas-Wedekind, Omnicell vice president, global marketing and product development. "The interoperability of Omnicell solutions is demonstrated daily in over 1600 hospitals nationwide. These survey results reinforce Omnicell's ability to address hospital IT leadership concerns in a meaningful way."

Omnicell announced they are demonstrating interoperable standards-based technology solutions with their automated dispensing cabinets for medication management at the HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase. The Showcase is part of the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition and is held in collaboration with Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE). The Showcase is located in Hall E of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida from February 20-24, 2011.
