Date:12/15/2009

kim CEO Dan Michel, whose father also suffered from Alzheimer's. "Our goal with this contest is to equip the winners with an enjoyable means of getting a daily or near-daily brain workout that can help them fight back by building a cognitive reserve of neurons and synapses that may help compensate for brain aging."

Each compact and portable Dakim touchscreen-based unit comes pre-loaded with entertaining multimedia brain games with the look and feel of a TV game show. Activities are played in 20-minute sessions that exercise short- as well as long-term memory, critical thinking, visuospatial orientation, calculation and language for a thorough brain workout. Answers are given simply by touching the screen, with no keyboard or mouse required.

The system offers different activities designed for users ranging from normal brain function to moderate dementia. It also self-adjusts in real time based on user performance, increasing or decreasing difficulty levels within a given exercise, and automatically updates activities online every few days to keep users engaged.

The Dakim approach is based on 20 years of medical research demonstrating that consistent, long-term cognitive stimulation can help reduce the risk of developing dementia by as much as 63%.
