Description With the advance of digital imaging technology, pathology specimen imaging is now advancing towards digital formats, allowing for easier manipulation, analysis, interpretation and telepathology. This advance in digital pathology imaging is analogous to the change that occurred in radiology, and which is continuing to occur in hospital imaging departments and imaging clinics through the introduction of digital radiology and Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS). For example, a single digital image of a 1cm x 1cm specimen generated by an automated microscope with a 40X objective requires the collection of 225 (675 for full color) overlapping images. These images are stitched together using software to create a large digital mosaic of the specimen. This process is very time consuming. Where the microscope has changed focus from one area to the next, stitching may fail and produce artifacts in the final image.
