Description Donor Screening: The Procleix System has added a significant layer of a safety to the nation's blood supply. It utilizes innovative technologies developed by Gen-Probe including target capture, and a unique nucleic acid amplification technique called Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA). The Procleix HIV-1/HCV Assay can simultaneously detect the presence of HIV-1 and HCV in blood donor samples. The combination HIV-1/HCV test system was developed and manufactured by Gen-Probe and is marketed worldwide as the Procleix System by Chiron Corporation. In 2002, Gen-Probe received approval of its Biologics License Application (BLA) for the first FDA-approved nucleic acid test for HIV-1 and HCV in donated human blood. In the U.S. alone, the American Red Cross, the America's Blood Center's affiliates, the Association of Independent Blood Centers and the U.S. military screen over 80% of the blood units donated annually with the Procleix system. The assay is also currently approved and used in 15 foreign countries.
