A Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope functions by projecting three elements - a light source, right eye observation path, and left eye observation path - simultaneously through the pupil. This illuminates the fundus and allows you to see the retina with both observation paths at the same time. This permits stereopsis or 3-dimensional vision. The variable, but exact, positioning of these three elements is critical to the performance of the BIO.
