Description Long term complications associated with diabetes continue to have a tremendous impact on the health and quality of life of patients, in addition to the significant economic costs. These complications are known to be associated with elevated levels of blood glucose. The discovery that the level of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in a diabetic patient's blood, reflects the average blood glucose concentration over the previous 90-120 day period, was a significant aid to treatment of the disease.
