|Description|| Estradiol (E2) is the most potent, naturally secreted estrogen and is the major estrogen produced by the ovary . In the ovary, estradiol is produced from testosterone [1,2], and from estrone, a less potent estrogen derived from androstenedione. Estrone and estradiol are interconverted in many body tissues. In men, small amounts of estradiol are produced in the testes and from peripheral conversion of androgens. The biological actions of estradiol include stimulation of linear bone growth, acceleration of epiphyseal closure, stimulation of mammary development, and maturation of the vaginal mucosa and uterine endometrium. Estradiol may also contribute to the development of the female (gynoid) body habitus, and may have metabolic and behavioral effects .
In adult premenopausal women, ovarian estradiol production is stimulated by the interactions of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) throughout the menstrual cycle. The increasing estradiol levels during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle appear to enhance gonadotropin stimulation, leading to a midcycle gonadotropin surge and subsequent ovulation . Increased estradiol (and progesterone) levels during the luteal phase inhibit gonadotropin secretion. In adult women, estradiol levels are measured in the evaluation of fertility and menstrual irregularities, and to monitor ovarian follicular function during induction of ovulation (e.g. as part of an in vitro fertilization procedure) .
