Home-going Delayed for Miracle Baby

Little Amillia Sonja Taylor is nothing short or tiny of being a miracle baby. The premature infant shocked neonatologists// round the world when she was delivered via C-section at just less than 22 weeks, and in spite of all odds, survived.

The tiny tot who was around the length of a ball point pen when born and weighed less than 10 ounces has now progressed to 4 pounds and for her mother, Sonja Taylor, that’s plump.

The baby was expected to be discharged yesterday, yet doctors led by Dr. Paul Fassbach are keeping her for a few more days. This is due to an increase in white blood cells, a sign of infection.

The baby has had more than her share of problems like respiratory complications, brain hemorrhage and digestive problems.

Yet doctors and staff at Baptist Children’s Hospital where she was delivered want to see the baby safe home at last and so are willing to take the extra precautions.

Amillia was conceived in vitro and has been in an incubator since birth. She will continue to receive a small amount of supplemental oxygen even after she goes home.

Fassbach has cautioned against rushing to redefine the medical standards for fetus viability.

He says: ``We just don't know which 21- to 22-weekers are going to do well and which are not going to do well. I don't think we should change what we do, but it shows us we need to do more research and find out where our edge of viability is going to go.''

Preterm births occur in about 12 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S., according to the National Institute of Health.
