Kidneys are in charge of maintaining the water level in the body and ensuring the toxins and impurities are excreted out. When the kidneys get affected, it results// in accumulation of toxins in the body, which might lead to health complications and even chronic renal failure.
Chronic renal failure can occur due to health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart failure. Chronic renal failure is not easy to detect and there are no accurate tests that can effectively predict the extent of kidney impairment.
Now a new test called eGFR, estimated glomerular filtration rate is capable of assessing the function of the kidneys in a comprehensible manner. The Department of Health has advised that all clinical biochemical laboratories should incorporate this test as part of the routine tests for blood urea and creatinine.
Interpreting the eGFR test is pretty easy, as any figure over 100 signifies normal functioning of the kidneys. An eGFR between 90 and 60 is also okay, especially if the patient is suffering a health problem, but a figure below 60 is a reason for alarm. An eGFR below 30 signifies that the kidney is severely impaired. Any figure below 15 is a confirmed case of renal failure, which would necessitate dialysis or even a transplant.
