New Delhi – A high court order enforced in New Delhi, the capital of India, has forbidden smoking while driving, effective April 9, 2007. This ban is unique//, being the first of its kind in the world that publicly acknowledges the risks of combining the activities of smoking and driving.

Doing two things at a time was never known to be good as it dilutes concentration, especially an activity like driving. A city in which road accidents account for 1900 deaths annually, this ruling by the high court is much appreciated. Additionally, the court has also forbidden the use of mobile phones while driving; getting caught more than five times might lead to revoke of license.

United States, seeing merit in such a ban, is presently mulling over the introduction of such bans while driving - activities like smoking, drinking, eating, reading, and writing while driving may soon be frowned upon.
