Women’s Health Takes the Spotlight in Ma

The 7th Annual National Women’s Health Week will be celebrated May 13-19 this year. It is an opportunity to raise awareness// about steps women can take to improve their health. Women often put their health behind the health of their children, spouses and other family members. This week encourages women to be mindful of their health as well.

“Sex Differences in Health Awareness Day” will be observed on May 15. Sponsored by the Society for Women’s Health Research, this special day reminds health care professionals and consumers about key differences in health between women and men that are often overlooked or misunderstood. For example, women and men often have different symptoms and warning signs prior to heart attacks. Women are disproportiaetly affected by osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, and mental health conditions, just to name a few conditions.

The Society for Women's Health Research has educational materials available for both health care professionals and consumers that outline sex differences across a wide range of diseases and medical conditions, as they relate to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The materials are available both in print and electronically through the Society’s Web site: www.womenshealthresearch.org. The Society’s “Just the Facts” publications outline sex differences between women and men in a wide range of areas. There are fact sheets tailored for both consumers and clinicians.

The Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD), which was launched last fall by the Society for Women's Health Research, is a scientific membership organization that works to enhance the knowledge of sex differences by facilitating interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds.

The OSSD’s First Annual Meeting will take place May 9-12, 2007, in Washington, D.C., and will offer researchers from across all biomedical research areas
