Women play truant for breast screening appointments

Nearly one among four women do not keep up their appointment for breast cancer screening and simply don’t show up for their mammogram appointment.//

A report has shown that out of 79000 women who were intimated to report for screening, less than 60,000 women actually turned up for the examination.

Sheila Caulfield of BreastCheck said 'It's an unusual service in that, if you or I make an appointment for the dentist, we make a conscious decision for ourselves. With BreastCheck the woman is invited, she's well, she's walking around feeling fine and there not always the same impetus to keep the appointment. But what we are trying to drive home is early detection — the fact that if breast cancer is detected in the early stages, it's very treatable and there is good chance of recovery.'

The overriding reasons for women not taking the screening seriously were unsuitable appointment times or locations and embarrassment. Ms Caulfield has reassured that appointment and venue could be changed and presently all radiographers employed at Breast check were women.
