Heart disease is at least six-times more likely to kill high-risk women compared to women without cardiovascular disease // say researchers based on findings of a recent study .

8,353 women who had cardiovascular disease or who were at high risk because of diabetes or multiple risk factors were studied. The women were assessed for three years to determine how doctors managed their cholesterol levels.

Researchers found only 7 percent of the women at the beginning of the study had optimal levels which improved to 12 percent after three years and only one-third of women received cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins, and very few women received drugs to control HDL and triglycerides.

Thus researchers say that the above findings suggest that therapies should be targeted to the specific cholesterol abnormalities in each woman, so that optimal levels of both the good and bad cholesterol can be attained.
