Women, be on guard against illegally procured IUDs

The State Department of Health Services has issued a warning about substandard contraceptive devices given to many women by Doctors. State health officials have pinned// down nearly eight doctors for procuring intrauterine devices from unlicensed parties and Internet vendors.

Dr. Mark Horton, State Public Health Officer said, "The physicians under investigation have failed to provide proper evidence that shows they purchased federally approved IUDs from FDA-approved sources. The fact that these IUDs have not been properly obtained means their safety and effectiveness are unknown. We will sanction those Family PACT and Medi-Cal providers who have violated the law and failed to protect the health of Californians."

The eight doctors have been asked to send letters to all the patients- estimated at 860 women who have received IUDs from January 2005. The letters are advisory in nature where patients are to check with Doctors regarding the condition of the IUD and consider replacement with a FDA approved IUD if necessary.
