Womb Cancer , A cause for worry among older women

More women in the age group of 60-79 are suceptible to cancer of the womb, according to recently proven figures, though survival rates are very optimistic. The survival statistics for this type of cancer //has gone up to 77% in the last 5 years an impovement of 16% in a 30 year period.

This note of optimism is accompanied by a flip side , suggesting a 30% increase in incidences of cancer in women between age 60—79, affecting nearly 6000 women in the UK alone. These figures account for nearly 4% of all cancers that cause the death of nearly 1500 women each year emphasising the most cruicial factor for survival – Early detection of the disease.

Cancer research UK is of the opinion, that low awareness of the disease and its sympoms contributes to advanced stages of the disease, the commonest symptom of womb cancer being vaginal bleeding after menopause.

Hysterectomy is an effective solution for women with womb cancers, especially in the early stages, though advanced stages warrant additional radiotherapy as well. Researchers have not been able to place a finger on the exact causes of womb cancer, though overweight women are certainly under high risk. Childless women are not exempt from this risk , and symptoms like excessive vaginal bleeding, bleeding after menopause, low pelvic pain should be attended to without delay.

The author of this report is Lucy, an epidemiologist with the Cancer Research at UK.
