Woman prisoner in Bihar found HIV positive

Patna, July 18 (IANS) A woman prisoner in a Bihar jail was detected as HIV positive //and admitted to a government hospital for treatment.

The 30-year-old, an under trial in Beur Jail here, was diagnosed as HIV positive at the Patna Medical College and Hospital this month. It is the first such case in a Bihar prison.

The woman from a village in Patna district, lodged in the prison three months ago on a murder charge, has "almost" full blown AIDS, said M.P. Singh, who is treating her at the hospital.

He said jail authorities had been informed but no official had visited her. When contacted, Jail Superintendent Dilip Kumar refused to comment.

According to the Bihar State AIDS Control Society (BSACS), there are over 6,000 HIV positive cases in the state, including 165 AIDS cases. Thirty-eight people have died of AIDS in Bihar.
