In a curious incident reported in Florida, USA, a 61-year-old woman caught shoplifting said she could not wait for too long// in the queue to pay her bill as she was suffering from irritable bowels.
A new side-effect of irritable bowel syndrome seems to have been discovered in the USA.
It could drive a person to shop-lifting too, it has been reported.
At least that was what a woman arrested for shoplifting claimed when she was caught shoplifting in Cape Coral, Florida, says Cape Coral Daily Breeze, a local newspaper.
61-year-old Helen Gallo of Clearwater walked into a grocery store on Sunday, removed a grocery bag from her purse and began filling it with various items, according to reporting officer Matthew Squires of the Cape Coral Police Department.
An employee reportedly watched Gallo fill the bag and notified his manager, who followed the woman outside the store and called police.
When an officer asked Gallo to explain her actions, the woman reportedly said: “I have IBS (irritable bowl syndrome) and could not wait in line.”
Gallo was charged with petit larceny and released from the Lee County jail on a 500 dollar bond.
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a problem that affects mainly the bowel which is also called the large intestine. The bowel is the part of the digestive system that makes and stores stool.
The word syndrome means a group of symptoms. IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.
But this is the first time it is cited as a motivating factor for shop-lifting!
