Wheaton College Affected By Mumps Outbreak

An outbreak of mumps has affected seven students at Wheaton College and has caused affected students to be sent home. The first case was identified on September 7. Mumps causes// swollen glands close to the jaw and fever, headache or muscle aches.

"We think we have a good handle on things, and we are monitoring the situation closely," said Dr. Rashmi Chugh, medical officer for the DuPage County Health Department. "We feel that Wheaton College has appropriately and promptly notified their students and staff."

This outbreak is being closely monitores since the most recent mumps outbreak has affected 4,643 people so far. Wheaton College and health officials have been unable to identify a source although investigations are on.

Sarah Pulliam, editor of the college's student newspaper said students were concerned. "Students are obviously concerned but not going crazy about this at all," Pulliam said.
