Welders Assist Surgeons in Andhra Pradesh

A rare surgery was performed on the victim of a freak accident at a government hospital in Kurnool in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.// Welders and a motley crew of technicians assisted the medical team in the operation.

While trying to cross the road in the Kurnool town, Abdul Sukur, a retired bank official, fell upon the road divider. One of the sharp-edged iron rods on the divider tore through his throat and pierced his palate. Traffic cops and passers-by struggled for over two hours to extricate Sukur from the metal frame.

But his ordeal was not yet over, as it was not humanly possible to completely remove the rod from his throat. Some technicians had managed to chop off whatever was jutting out. But still nearly a foot-long metal piece was left stuck in Sukur's throat. He was then taken to the government hospital.

It was a challenge for the doctors too. In the event welders and other technicians were summoned to the operation theatre, and they donned the surgeon’s robes. Hacksaw blades were pressed into service.

After three hours of surgery, the doctors finally succeeded in removing the metal piece. Sukur is now reported to be on the road to recovery, reports say.
