Weight-Loss Drugs – Will They also Make You Lose Sleep

New York – To delve into whether weight loss drugs are really safe, an analysis of previous insights into the risks and benefits of weight loss drugs was conducted. What// came to light was the lack of data to make a cost-benefit analysis of these drugs.

Two Canadian researchers, Raj Padwal and Sumit Majumdar of the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton argue that drugs like sibutramine (Meridia), orlistat (Xenical) and rimonabant (Acomplia) are no doubt beneficial in shedding weight , but whether they are actually safe is still ambiguous. Additionally, the researchers felt that such drugs are incapable of influencing long term changes, with most giving up abruptly.

The goal of these drugs should ideally hover around enabling an overall health benefit, rather than a single benefit – of weight loss- at the cost of another (heart health)! Whether these drugs offset risks of CHD or stroke is yet unclear. Therefore the researchers felt that anti-obesity tests on such dugs should include checking the long-term effects of the drug on a healthy person rather than just meeting the weight loss objective. The need of the hour is undoubtedly a proactive weight loss drug.
