Previously it was said that diuretics or water pills based treatment resulted in the lowest rate of heart failure due to // hypertension in both the groups of African-Americans and Americans. Now the same researchers are saying that the same drugs can benefit the patients with diabetes who suffer from high blood pressure and related cardiovascular illness.

The research findings form a part of the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) studies. ALLHAT is considered one of the most important sets of trials conducted for hypertension by researchers of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland University and a few more centers. The trials were conducted in a cross-cultural milieu involving afro-Americans and other people.

In an earlier research report the ALLHAT studies reported that diuretics were better than any other first-step anti-hypertensive medications in preventing adverse cardiovascular disease outcomes. In the current findings researchers report that this is not only true for people with normal blood sugar but also for people with high blood sugar levels (diabetes) or impaired fasting glucose levels (pre-diabetes) as well.

Researchers report that compared to other drugs the diuretics were beneficial against heart failures in patients with or without diabetes and against strokes in people with or without diabetes.
