Want To Quit Smoking? Exercise Could Help

Regular exercise combined with nicotine replacement therapy could help people who want quit smoking.Scientist Ralf H. Zwick and colleagues at the Otto Wagner Hospital// in Vienna enrolled 68 smokers in a three-month study and gave them nicotine-replacement therapy, reported the online edition of health magazine WebMD.

At the same time, half the would be quitters enrolled in an exercise programme.

The nicotine treatment worked pretty well. Just over half the smokers on nicotine replacement alone were able to quit, the researchers said.

Exercise plus nicotine worked even better. Eighty percent of those who moved their butts put out their butts.

Nicotine replacement is one of the most useful tools for people who want to kick their cigarette habit. But kicking these kickers into high gear works even better, the study found.

'Exercise training is an effective therapy without side effects and aids in smoking cessation,' the researchers reported at the CHEST 2006 meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Salt Lake City from Oct 21-26.
