Waitress At A Lloydminister Steakhouse Infected By Hep A

A 23-year-old waitress at KC Steakhouse Family Restaurant at Lloydminister, has tested positive for Hepatitis A. //

Hepatitis A is caused by a virus and affects the liver and causes fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal discomfort followed by yellow jaundice a few days later.

“The risk of transmission of this virus from the worker to patrons of the restaurant is small,” said Brenda Cholin, medical health officer for PNHR(Prairie North Health Region).

“However, to minimize the risk, Hepatitis A vaccinations will be offered to persons who ate at the KC Steakhouse restaurant from Monday Nov. 20, to Tuesday, Nov. 28.” People who visited the place restaurant between Nov. 20 and Nov. 28 have been alerted.

The Hepatitis A vaccine will give protection if received within 14 days after contact.

KC was closed on Thursday afternoon , the building was sanitized and the staff were vaccinated. Chris Perkins, owner and operator of KC Steakhouse, said “We just want people to go down and get a shot and it will be no big deal,” said Perkins. “I am doing everything publicly I can to protect my business’s reputation, that’s all I can do. I don’t know how the public is going to react to it.”

The virus is spread via faeces, by direct contact with an infected person or indirectly by eating or drinking contaminated food or liquids. Washing hands with soap, particularly after using the toilet and before handling food, minimizes the risk.
